Interior Steam Disinfection

Popular Questions

How often should I have my vehicle washed?
Regularly washing your vehicle removes everyday contaminants like dirt, tar, road debris, and bird droppings that can ruin your car’s paint job over a period. But how often do you need to wash your vehicle to keep it in immaculate condition? Can you wash your vehicle too much? The answer depends on several factors, including your lifestyle, the climate where you reside, and how you store your vehicle when you’re not operating it.

If the weather isn’t too bitter where you live, washing your vehicle every two weeks is a good rule of thumb. However, if you opt for a coat of wax at the end of each cleaning session, you may be able to wash it less often. In addition to giving your vehicle an appealing shine, regularly waxing your vehicle is essential because it helps preserve the clear coat over a vehicle’s paint.

Waxing your vehicle adds an extra layer of protection against harsh weather, road salt, bird droppings, tree sap, ultraviolet rays, and other assorted contaminants found in the air and on roads.

Why is Superheated Dry Vapor steam so good at cleaning and disinfecting surfaces?
Using a combination of high heat and high pressure, steam cleaners and steam cleaning kill most germs, viruses and bacteria that dwell on surfaces, but there’s a catch. The steam dispersed from the steam cleaner must be hot enough to achieve proper disinfection.

Typically, steam will disinfect and kill 99.99% of germs, bacteria, viruses, and other potentially harmful pathogens with seconds to a few minutes  of sustained contact at a temperature between 175 and 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Our steamers reach nozzle tip temperatures of 356° F, therefore disinfection takes place in seconds versus several minutes.

Above all, using this method to disinfect vehicle interiors precludes the use of harsh chemicals to disinfect and clean surfaces.

When should I wash off insect residue?
The short answer is immediately, or as soon as possible. Once bug residue dries on your paint surface, it becomes very difficult to remove. While it is drying, the acidic nature of its insides eats into the paint. If left in place, what is left of the bug (bugs) will decompose and produce enzymes and proteins that bond to the surface and etch the clearcoat. And if you leave them on for a period of time, they could cause some damage to your car’s paint.

So, bug residue needs to be dealt with immediately. Our favorite product to tackle bug removal is Schaeffer Manufacturing 266 Citrol Cleaner and Industrial Degreaser.

What kind of car wash should I choose?
The best possible wash for your vehicle’s finish is a handwash. It’s the least abrasive wash you can perform without sacrificing attention to detail. Though as with anything in life, sometimes the best possible isn’t an option. So what’s second best (and third, fourth, fifth and sixth)? Here’s our ranking:

  1. Handwash (Includes Exterior Steam Cleaning)
  2. Touchless wash (if using gentle soap)
  3. Rinseless wash
  4. Waterless wash
  5. Brushless wash
  6. Automatic wash

Can you wash your vehicle too much?
Is washing your vehicle often a bad things? You can’t wash your vehicle too much if you’re doing it properly. However, not washing your vehicle enough can cause damage, and your vehicle may not be as clean as you think.

Substances like tree sap or bird droppings are trickier to see than a layer of salt coating the paint, and operators often leave these things on the vehicle for too long. Infrequent washings can also cause brake dust to build up and eat through your wheel finishes.

Is a touchless car wash the safest?
A “touchless” automatic wash cleans your vehicle without use of bristles or brushes. Instead, the entire wash is conducted with chemical cleaners, pressure washers and pressurized air. Sounds like it solves all the problems of other automatic washes, right?

Well, not quite. For one, you’ve still got harsh chemicals to deal with. So unless you want to dry out your paint or risk stripping your wax/coating, make sure you know ahead of time what kind of chemicals they’re using.

Interior Vehicle Steam Disinfection and Sanitizing

Keeping your vehicle interior clean, disinfected, and sanitized is a good practice in keeping good health. Car detailing is considered a deep cleaning and restorative service.

We all generally clean our homes with bleach in the bathrooms and disinfectants in our kitchens, but do we consider the germs on the surfaces of the interior of our car? Parents, would you allow your child to only clean their germy room every once in a while?

Recent studies show the average steering wheel has more than 4 times the bacteria than that of a public toilet seat! When you think about it, it makes sense! The first surface we touch after traveling to and from different environments is our steering wheel, seat belt, sound system, etc.

The good news is cleaning your car’s interior with steam that is 356° Fahrenheit, will sanitize everything. We disinfect, sanitize and clean vehicle interiors with the Polti Sani System Steam Cleaner which produces the hottest dry vapor steam of any portable steam cleaner on the market; that’s significantly hotter and drier than any other steam machine used in auto detailing.

Most steam machines operate at around 211° F to 310° F. Our steamers greatly enhance its cleaning and sanitizing capabilities.

Sanitizing vs. Sterilizing

Sanitizing refers to lowering germ counts to a safe level, whereas sterilizing involves killing nearly all germs. The Center for Disease Control & Prevention states:

“Of all the methods available for sterilization, moist heat in the form of saturated steam under pressure is the most widely used and the most dependable.”

While steam is capable of complete sterilization, the total time of exposure to steam for complete sterilization varies greatly because of the porousness of the surfaces in an automobile.

Sanitization occurs in a much shorter time frame. All of our interior services will sanitize your vehicles interior and this is something that we can comfortably claim.

Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and Extra Precautions

During this time our detailers will be taking extra precautions when it comes to their clothing and PPE on the job. Here are how our detailers are doing their part in not spreading germs:

  • Wearing long sleeve clothing (when appropriate)
  • Wearing face coverings while steaming
  • Wearing protective gloves for each vehicle
  • Offering clients options for contactless payment
  • As always, freshly washed towels are used for each vehicle

As added precaution we are also steam cleaning our brushes, sponges, and other equipment after every detail job.

Our Story | Quality of Service

Wash Em’ While You Work Car Wash was created out of a desire to clean  vehicles without using harsh chemicals. Our founder possessed an obsession with vehicle cleanliness and concern for our environment, and wanted to find a way to clean vehicles that didn’t leave strong chemical odors lingering on interior surfaces. He searched for an alternative to harsh, chemical cleaning products that are likely harmful to breathe over a prolonged period and potentially diminish exterior finishes.

He stumbled upon dry-vapor steam cleaning as a superior option to achieve his goal from an old European friend. He imported his first commercial steam cleaner to try it out on his BMW X5 SUV and fell in love with the vehicle steam cleaning concept. Steam was the answer he was looking for. With the use of steam, an entire detailing business was created.

When we detail any vehicle, we execute our services with the most eco-friendly approach. Steam is the first step, followed by eco-friendly, non-toxic cleaners. We make sure that any cleaners that are used aren’t harmful to our team or our clients.

We use high-end commercial grade superheated dry vapor steam cleaners to remove deeply embedded dirt and grime, sticky decals, and residue left behind by bumper stickers. This is accomplished by the powerful steam vapor system which uses a boiler like a steam cleaner to create pressurized steam to effortlessly clean, sanitize, and deodorize. But unlike a steam cleaner, what comes out of the tip of a steam vapor system is less than 5% water. The steam temperatures generated reached 200° F to 356° F at the nozzle tip which easily and quickly kill germs, viruses and bacteria that dwell on surfaces.

Our commercial grade superheated dry vapor steam cleaners clean and disinfect at the same time. There is no use for harsh or toxic chemicals. With the steam vapor process, we can clean interior items such as carpets, mats, seats, trunks, and headliners very quickly without a long dry time. The interior will also be sanitized while eliminating unpleasant odors. Our highly efficient superheated dry vapor steam cleaners allow us to clean vehicles with a couple of gallons of water at half the time of conventional mobile detailers.

Steam cleaning is excellent to clean hard-to-reach areas like air vents, footwells, in between seats, and the small spaces between your dashboard buttons. Dusting and wiping down your car’s interior regularly cannot get rid of allergens and germs that may have accumulated over time, but steam cleaning can.

Above all, you get a beautiful, clean vehicle without causing damage to your vehicle or the environment. Most old-fashioned cleaning technologies rely on water and chemical agents to clean your vehicle. With steam cleaning, you only need a high quality, commercial-grade steam cleaner and a little water to do the job. That’s certainly more than enough reason for you to try steam cleaning technology the next time you book a professional vehicle detailing.
